Outside of the unofficial patch (TSLRCM 1.8.3) and the expansion mod (M4-78EP), never use any other mod, as that will break the game and stop story progression in its tracks. If not for the persistent bugs and how a few missions just jump into play, instead flowing into them, I would give it a 9.5. KotOR was a definitive 10 for me, but I'll give this one an 8.5. Even with these patches and mods, the game still has a bugs (a few are nasty still) and some weird graphical anomalies. The unofficial patches and an expansion mod makes this game a far cry better than the mess it was when it was first released. Having said this, I think this is a must buy especially if you have played KotOR, as the references to KotOR are often mentioned during the gameplay. While I think the storyline in KotOR II is deeper than KotOR, it is not as good overall when considering KotOR II's ending. Gameplay is near identical to KotOR as well. The story is pretty good and your character development is a bit deeper than the one in KotOR. The game is now much better and plays essentially the same as KotOR, except there's an influence system where you can have an effect on your companions, and deeper weapon/item creation systems along with a few more light saber/force powers.

I bought this game back when it came out. The sub-series' original creator, BioWare, has ties to Obsidian and its team of veteran developers, and was also involved in the design of this sequel.
